Dr. Griffin of City Center Dental Care is blogging to continue his efforts to increase awareness of the best local restaurants in our community. Today, we’re going to talk about a restaurant that’s the perfect amount of snazz for special occasions like anniversaries or important business dinners.
By far, the best steak that I’ve ever gotten in Newport News, and possibly the world, comes from Schlesinger’s Steakhouse. What makes this place so unique is that it’s a black tie restaurant that serves steaks that would satisfy the hungriest of cowboys. These steaks would even make Ron Swanson swoon. Besides, who doesn’t love a good steak? (Well, maybe my vegan and vegetarian readers.)
The first thing I noticed about Schlesinger’s that makes it such a treat is the setting. Schlesinger’s Steakhouse elegantly sits in Port Warwick of Newport News. Upon walking into the restaurant, I was completely impressed by the lighting and sophistication of the staff. I’d definitely recommend getting a little extra dressed up for this occasion, otherwise you might feel a little underdressed.
I liked that our waiter was kind and helpful, but at the same time he didn’t hover over our table. There’s nothing worse having a waiter ask you questions all meal, when you’ve got a mouth full of steak.
Alright, now onto the food. While the setting and service was amazing, the food is what really made this restaurant shine. We, being my wife and I, began our eating experience with an order of biscuits, and they were sinfully good.
They were beautifully presented in a pastry bag and came with a side of honey butter. It might sound hard to believe, but these biscuits would give your grandmother’s family recipe a run for their money. They were perfectly fluffy and flaky.
Next, I ordered the 12 oz Steak Schlesinger. The Steak Schlesinger is a filet mignon topped in jumbo lump crabmeat, and grilled portabella mushrooms served with a Béarnaise sauce. I was definitely confident in my decision once my perfectly made to order steak arrived at the table.
I ordered my steak rare, and I was stoked to see that it came out perfectly melt-in-your-mouth textured. Other steakhouses I’ve been to tend to send their “rare” steaks out as medium-rare, but not Schlesinger’s.
This was one of the greatest steaks I’ve ever had in my life. The Béarnaise was perfectly rich to complement the mushrooms and asparagus. The crab meat was fresh and delicious, as well. But, in retrospect, the steak was the real winner.
While my meal was amazing and the atmosphere was classy, the bill was also upscale. But, with that being said, when it comes to food, you get what you pay for. So, if you’re on a tight budget, this might not be the best choice for you.
The only somewhat recommendation I’d make for the staff would be to work on their presentation. As someone who watches many cooking shows, I know that upscale restaurants are supposed to have beautifully presented plates. My plate was beautiful, but only because it had a steak on it. The vegetables could’ve used some presentation.
So, if you’re looking for a scrumptious meal for a classy occasion, head over to Schlesinger’s. Not only is the food great, but they also participate in great causes like the Ferguson Enterprise’s fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
I wasn’t going to mention teeth, but make sure that you floss your teeth afterwards. Steak has a way of getting in between your teeth, and food build up in between teeth can lead to interproximal cavities. Those are bad news.
