Dental Implant Process

Here at City Center Dental Care, we want to assure you that although the words dental implant may sound a little intimidating, there is nothing to be concerned about or fear. The process of dental implantation is virtually painless and Dr. Griffin is a well-established dentist in this industry. We call this a process because it can performed over a few months in different stages.

Set Up a Consultation

The very first step an interested patient must take to get dental implants is to schedule a consultation with us at City Center Dental Care in Newport News, VA. Dr. William T. Griffin will meet with you and examine your teeth, jaw, gums and mouth in order to determine whether or not you will qualify for dental implants. Fortunately, there a number of options that patients have to help them qualify for dental implantation in the future, like bone grafts and soft tissue augmentation. Dr. Griffin will personally review your chart with you to tell you what you will need to schedule to get a healthier and complete smile. He will also speak with you about the sedation methods that he feels best suit your physical state and the severity of the damage that needs to be repaired.

Our Dental Implant Procedure

The dental implantation process is what we call an outpatient procedure, which means patients are able to go home the same day it is performed. Dr. Griffin will administer a sedative that he feels is the most appropriate for each patient before he begins the procedure. We will make sure that the patient is comfortable and cannot feel a thing before we begin.

Stage one. We will surgically, but gently embed the dental implant fixture along the jawbone in the area surrounding the missing tooth. After the fixture is installed, you are ready for a period of rest and recovery, during which osseointegration will take place. During the process of osseointegration, the implant naturally and organically fuses with the jawbone to eventually work as a natural piece of the mouth. When this process has completed, you will return to our practice for the next step of the process.

Stage two. At this point, Dr. Griffing will assure that the titanium has integrated naturally in the jaw and will then attach the fixture with an abutment, which links the porcelain crown to the dental implant. Following this, the gum tissue must heal around the abutment to develop a sleeve that Dr. Griffin will access in the third stage of the process.

Stage Three. Finally it is time for Dr. Griffin to place the tooth-colored crown onto the dental implant, which is so natural-looking that it will be indistinguishable from the patients natural teeth. We spend a great deal of time making sure that the dental implants match the sizing, color, composition, and shape of the natural teeth to complete your brilliant smile.
